KAPNAYAN 2012 National High School Quiz Contest​
Rules and Regulations​
​

I. QUALIFICATIONS
Students from all high schools nationwide are qualified to join. Each school shall have FIVE representatives (minimum of three) who are bonafide students, two of whom shall serve as alternates.



II. APPLICATION
Submit duly accomplished forms on or before October 30, 2012 to our uplbchemsoc.wix.com/kapnayan-2012 or to the office of the UPLB Chemical Society Office (A-134), Institute of Chemistry, Physical Sciences Building, University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna 4031. Walk-in participants for the quiz contest will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Limited slots will be allowed for the walk-in participants.



III. SCOPE OF THE QUIZ
The quiz questions will be on general chemistry. Questions related to the theme will also be included.



IV. REGISTRATION

Registration will start at 7:00 am on November 12, 2012 at the Physical Sciences lobby. Each team shall pay registration fee of Php 750.00 to cover the expenses of the students’ paraphernalia. Accommodation (i.e. food, housing and other provisions) is NOT included in the registration fee. If the number of participants exceeds five, an additional Php 100.00 will be charged per head.

ELIMINATION PHASE

This phase will consist of a 60-item written examination. This will be participated in by all the members of the team. The first 50 questions shall be considered for the qualification phase and the last 10 questions only for the breaking of ties. The total score of the team is the summation of the three highest scorers of the members. SCIENTIFIC CALCULATORS shall be provided by the participants. Contestants caught cheating shall be penalized by disqualifying the school s/he represents. TWENTY TEAMS shall be chosen to participate the Final phase. Ranking will be done irrespective of regions. The highest individual scorer will be awarded a medal. The school which obtained the highest score will also be given special award.



FINAL PHASE

1. The easy and average rounds will consist of 15 questions each while difficult round will consist of 10 questions and the point system shall be as follows:

2. The twenty teams who qualified in the final phase will compete up to the difficult round. Thus, the score is cumulative.



3. Answers will be written on the official answer sheet provided by the Society and should be encircled or boxed.



4. All questions will be read twice. Only after the first reading shall the question sheet be given to the contestants.



5. Misspelled answers will be considered incorrect.



6. All questions shall be answered within 10 seconds unless specified by the quiz master. Only encircled/boxed answers will be considered. Unencircled/unboxed and late answers will not be accepted.



7. Substitution of contestants will only be allowed after each round.



8. Ties will be resolved by elimination. Three questions will be asked and the team with the highest score after the third question wins. If tie persist additional questions will be asked and the teams will be eliminated by knockout system.



9. Any question or complaint during the final phase must be directed to the Board of Judges composed of five members of the UPLB Institute of Chemistry Faculty before the next question has read. Otherwise, all questions will not be entertained. The decision of the Board of Judges is FINAL AND UNAPPEALABLE.



10. The top three teams will be given trophies and medals. All participating teams will be awarded certificates of recognition.

VI. MISCELLANEOUS



a. Coaching from the audience is strictly prohibited. Any team caught receiving coached answers will be automatically disqualified.



b. The official members of the participating teams should bring their proper identification cards.



c. Scientific calculators are needed in both elimination and quiz proper. No calculator will be provided by the society.



d. Only black or blue ballpen will be allowed.

e. The Quiz Committee reserves the right to make any revision of these rules. Proper notification to concerned parties however shall be made in such case.
